Respiratory medicine is a sub-specialty of medicine encompassing diseases of the airways, lungs, chest wall and breathing.

  • Unexplained breathlessness (non cardiac)
  • Abnormal chest x-ray needing further evaluation
  • Chest pain (non cardiac)
  • Chronic cough
  • Complex cardio-respiratory disease
  • Recurrent chest infections
  • 2 week wait referral for suspected lung cancer
  • Suspected lung fibrosis or other interstitial lung disease
  • Respiratory failure
  • Persistent cough
  • Uncontrolled asthma in pregnancy
  • Suspected occupational induced lung disease
  • Patients needing bronchoscopy
  • Pleural diseases
  • Patients with asthma with frequent exacerbations being treated with steroids and step three medication (with normal chest x-ray)
  • Suspected or diagnosed Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with -
    • Diagnostic uncertainty
    • Rapid decline in functional status
    • Severe COPD  
    • Recurrent exacerbations
    • Consideration for maintenance steroids
    • Symptoms disproportionate to lung function deficit
    • Early age onset and/or absence of smoking
    • Recurrent chest infections
