Corporate information

West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is a highly successful, award-winning trust providing hospital and community services to a population of around 280,000 people who live in west Suffolk.

Our vision is to pursue quality and excellence for patients, putting their health and wellbeing first. We aim to be one of the safest and most joined-up healthcare systems in England, working in more integrated ways with those that provide health and social care in our community.

We work hard to meet the challenges facing the NHS: people living longer, with complex issues, lifestyle diseases including obesity, alcoholism and smoking. This means not just treating the patient in front of us but working with our partners across west Suffolk to promote a healthy life and ensure we have the right care in the right place to support them to live as independently as possible.

West Suffolk Hospital

We provide acute hospital services from our 430-bed hospital set in parkland on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds. The hospital has an emergency department, obstetrics, maternity and neonatal services, a day surgery unit, eye unit and children’s wards and provides the full range of secondary care services. We refer many patients who need more specialist care to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and many of our consultants work in both hospitals.

We train the doctors of the future and provide the clinical base for the Cambridge Graduate Medical course. We value our student doctors and other trainees in the healthcare professions and are a centre of excellence for education.

Outpatient services

We provide outpatient services in the community providing convenient local access to our consultants and other clinical staff. Outpatient appointments are currently offered in the following locations:

  • Newmarket Community Hospital
  • Haverhill Health Centre
  • Thetford Healthy Living Centre
  • Stowmarket Health Centre
  • Sudbury Health Centre
  • Botesdale Health Clinic
  • Mildenhall Clinic

Community services

We provide community services for the residents of west Suffolk as part of partnership of providers including Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, Norfolk Community Healthcare NHS Trust and Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. These services are currently being developed further as we move to more integrated ways of working.
