Continuity of Carer

The continuity of carer programme is an approach in which mums-to-be and their families have a small dedicated team of midwives for the duration of the pregnancy, birth and after their little one is born.

This approach has been backed by the local maternity voices partnership, and it is envisaged that it will build a strong relationship of trust over time between the mum-to-be and their midwife.

Since launching in November 2020, around a quarter of women under our maternity services have benefitted from the new approach. Our aim is that most women will receive continuity of carer throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond by April 2023.

The approach is currently being offered to birthing people from selected locations and to those who have previously had Caesarean sections.
