Cardiology

The West Suffolk Cardiac Centre is a state-of-the art self-contained cardiac unit comprising of a large and modern in-patient ward area, cardiac catheter lab area with six recovery beds and cardiology diagnostics department all located together.

Opened in 2018, the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust invested £5.2m in developing the centre. The lower-ground floor unit at the West Suffolk Hospital brings together the cardiology ward, acute cardiac care unit and diagnostics unit, which were previously located in different parts of the hospital. The centre now hosts a state-of-the-art catheterisation lab, enabling the Trust to carry out a combination of diagnostic angiograms and pacemaker procedures five days a week. This means better care and reduced waiting times for patients and reduced pressure on other centres where patients were once referred.

Completion of the centre, in particular the transfer of the hospital’s cardiac diagnostics unit, was made possible by My WiSH Charity, and was opened by jockey Frankie Dettori. The appeal for the centre was the biggest appeal My WiSH has undertaken to date.
