Simple steps to keep you safe during your hospital stay

While you are in hospital, keeping you safe and well is a priority for the staff looking after you.

There are also some simple things you can do to help keep yourself safe during your hospital stay:

  • Check your hospital wristband, make sure we have the right details for you.
  • Know your medicines and tell staff if you have any allergies.
  • Protect yourself from slips, trips and falls by wearing appropriate footwear. Wait for staff to help you if you need it.
  • Prevent pressure ulcers by regularly changing your position in bed.
  • Keep active to prevent blood clots by doing simple leg and ankle exercises.
  • Help protect yourself from infections by regularly washing your hands and asking your visitors to do the same.
  • When it’s time to go home – make sure you know when you will receive your discharge letter and any follow up appointments and who to contact should you have any questions.

If you feel that you are becoming more unwell, speak to your ward staff to tell them how you are feeling. If you feel your concerns about deterioration are not receiving enough clinical attention, you can telephone the Call 4 Concern helpline on 01284 713000. We know patients and their families have a unique understanding of their bodies and we want to hear from you if you have concerns.

Remember, our staff are here to keep you safe and well, so please ask if you have any questions or concerns.
