West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust appoints new chief executive
West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to announce Dr Ewen Cameron as its new chief executive.
Ewen is currently the director of improvement and transformation for Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH), a role he has held since February 2018. Ewen also held the role of interim chief operating officer for CUH in 2021/22. Having originally trained in Cambridge, in 2007 he returned to the Trust as a consultant gastroenterologist with an interest in endoscopy. He was the clinical lead for endoscopy and the clinical director of the Cambridge Bowel Cancer Screening Centre from 2007 until 2013, when he was appointed divisional director for medicine.
At CUH, Ewen has been responsible for the development of a programme of continuous improvement within the organisation as well as cost improvement, digital and innovation. He has continued to practice as a Gastroenterologist.
Jude Chin, chair of West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“Following an extensive recruitment process, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Ewen Cameron as our new, permanent chief executive.
“Ewen joins us with a wealth of NHS experience, grounded in a clinical background as a gastroenterologist. His experience as chief operating officer at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he has led a programme of continuous improvement, means he will bring a huge amount of knowledge and insight to his new role as chief executive at West Suffolk.
“The Trust has been through a difficult couple of years – dealing with the pandemic and on top of that an NHS England commissioned review into whistleblowing. Throughout this time, our interim chief executive, Craig Black, has done an incredible job in steadying the organisation and on behalf of our Board and governors we would like to publicly thank Craig for stepping up through this challenging time. We are all hugely indebted to him.
“We have been confirmed as one of 40 trusts across the country to receive funding for new build projects and our plan is to develop a new health and care facility to replace our ageing hospital. We welcome Ewen as our new chief executive to take us forward through this exciting, next chapter for West Suffolk.
Speaking about his appointment Ewen said:
“I am hugely honoured to be joining West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. It is an excellent healthcare organisation, with an incredibly dedicated and hardworking team delivering high-quality care for patients.
“I am really looking forward to bringing the experience I’ve gained in Cambridge as a doctor and leader to work on the exciting opportunities for improving the health of the local population and making West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust the best it can possibly be for patients and staff."
Ewen is expected to join West Suffolk in the new year.
