Project to replace the West Suffolk Hospital confirmed

On Friday, 20 September, the Government published the terms of reference for its review of the New Hospital Programme. As part of this, it outlines the schemes which are not within the scope of the review.

The Trust is delighted to announce that the project to deliver a replacement West Suffolk Hospital on the Hardwick Manor site has been confirmed and can proceed.

The terms of reference outline that hospital schemes with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) "will proceed at pace".

While the future system team has not ceased work on the project during the period since the review was announced, they will continue working hard to deliver a new West Suffolk Hospital.

Dr Ewen Cameron, chief executive of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The Trust welcomes the Government’s announcement to prioritise the replacement of RAAC hospitals, such as West Suffolk Hospital, which they’ve confirmed to be outside of the scope of the current New Hospital Programme review.

“This is good news for our patients, staff and communities in and around west Suffolk. We continue progressing our plans to deliver a replacement West Suffolk Hospital on the adjacent Hardwick Manor site in Bury St Edmunds. Working closely with the Government’s New Hospital Programme team, we will ensure the project is completed in the most effective way.”

Gary Norgate, programme director for the future system, said: "We are delighted to have been given the green light by the Government. We will continue working with our New Hospital Programme colleagues to make sure we deliver a new West Suffolk Hospital as effectively as possible."
