Health teams join up at Mildenhall Hub

Trust staff are among those from West Suffolk Alliance health services that have now moved into a designated Health Hub within the newly-opened Mildenhall Hub.

They will be working alongside colleagues from a range of public services, including social care staff, to improve the quality and safety of care, as well as patients’ experience of required services.

The Sheldrick Way site opened earlier this year and also provides a school, leisure centre, job centre, citizens advice, children’s centre, library and access to services including the county and district councils and police.

The Health Hub is run by the Trust and includes a number of its community services:

  • the local health team of nurses, therapists, generic workers and community matron
  • cardiac rehabilitation and heart failure specialist team
  • specialist paediatric speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • community midwives and antenatal services
  • adult and paediatric dietetics
  • adult speech and language therapy
  • phlebotomy.

Alliance partner Suffolk GP Federation is providing:

  • podiatry services
  • bladder and bowel services
  • GP extended access service (GP+)
  • GP out of hours service.

Alliance partner West Suffolk Council is providing the following at the Lark Family Hub:

  • Baby weighing
  • Child development reviews and sessions.

Macmillan Cancer Support will also be providing care at the Health Hub.

The alliance way of working is now well-established in Suffolk, bringing together a whole range of public services to ensure care is provided to suit people’s individual needs, and considers their home environment and social issues as well as any health conditions.

Alliance delivery lead for health Kevin McGinness said: “This move is a big step towards achieving our ambitions of integrated working with partners across health and social care in Suffolk. We know this brings many benefits for patients and their families, for staff and for the wider community, making the most of our resources.

“For our colleagues it means being able to share information and best practice, and to come together to find ways to achieve the best outcomes for people who may be living with a number of significant issues, helping them to regain as much independence as possible.

“Bringing so many services together in Mildenhall will help us develop relationships and learn more about the most effective ways to work with a range of partners, improving the quality of life for people in Suffolk.”

One of the partners that will be working alongside health is Abbeycroft Leisure, which runs the leisure facilities at the Mildenhall Hub on behalf of West Suffolk Council.

Warren Smyth, chief executive of Abbeycroft Leisure which runs the leisure facilities at Mildenhall Hub on behalf of West Suffolk Council, said: “One of the main purposes of the Hub is to bring together public services to improve the health, wellbeing and education for the community. With the school and leisure services already up and running in the Mildenhall Hub alongside other community and public services, all of the Hub partners are delighted to welcome our NHS colleagues into the Mildenhall Hub. We can all now look forward to working even more collaboratively with the NHS and our other Hub partners for the benefit of residents in the local area.”

Most of the services based at the Health Hub are not drop-in services and will usually require referral from your GP or other professional; or in some cases self-referral.
